The very first logo was a mold, but since 1904 the shell is a "Pecten".
The graphic for this emblems is extremely accurate and is subject to
strict recommendations of the Group.
All activities of the Royal Dutch / Shell Group must use this emblem.
Two Group companies may use another logo:
- Butagaz Shell France (blue bear, created in 1969) - Sold in 2015 to the DCC group
- Billiton (mining company of the Group 1970/1994)
The colors used : red and yellow
The exact origins of the Shell are hard to define, two théories :
1)- Both colors are those of the House of
Orange-Nassau who sponsored the Royal Dutch in its infancy
and the
shell is that of Shell Transport.
2)- In 1915 when the Shell Company of
California first built service stations, they had to compete against
other companies.
Bright colours were the solution but colours that would not
offend the Californians. Because of the
stat's
strong spanish connection the red et yellow of Spain were
chosen.
To fight against their main competitor, the American giant: the ”Standard Oil” belongings Rockefeller, the two companies, which were associated with
French Rothschild in Paris (specialized in Russian oil), make it up and found “The Asiatic Petroleum Company" in 1903.
The Royal Dutch and Shell share their activities in two new companies: the English company “ Pétroleum company Ltd” in London and the Dutch
“Bataasfsche Petroleum Maatschappij” in The Hague.
They will be at the basis of the development for the Royal Dutch/Shell group.
It is in 1919 that Shell is established in France, but a little history should be made:
It is necessary to go back to 1843, time when Alexandre Deutsch de la Meurthe built in Pantin (gates of Paris) a small vegetable oil factory intended
for the oil lamps used for lighting and a spirits distilling of turpentine.
In 1851 it offer oneself purchaser of 224 wood barrels containing crude oil coming from the wells of Pennsylvania (the USA) on board “Elisabeth Watts”,
sailing ship American.
In fact it manufactures mineral wax candles drawn from oil and it studies the first oil distillation methods.
In 1876 Alexander Deutsch de la Meurthe becomes the first refiner of France and installs a refinery close to Rouen, in Petit Couronne (Seine inférieure, at this time)
where it produces among others the “Luciline” (paraffin oil).
This is the name given to the refinery, named after his little daughter Lucie.
A second refinery is built in St Loubet (Gironde), in the vines close to Bordeaux

It is in boat, the gas tanker “Agnita” (the only one of this kind at this
time), which arrived, coming from Houston (the USA), the first cargo of
